I am inclined to agree with your wife. Your illness affects not only you

but also the rest of your family and friends.

If you reveal your prognosis now, it will give the people who love

you an opportunity to step up to the plate and offer emotional support,

not only to you, but also to her and your family.

영어에서 친족관계를 얘기할때 Immediate family와 extended family란 용어를 사용합니다. Immediate family는 부모, 자식, 형제, 자매에 국한된 한국어의 가족에 해당합니다. 반면 extended family는 가족 이외의 모든 친척을 얘기합니다. 한국어의 “가까운 친척”이란 표현을 찾자면 Close relative가 아닐까 생각합니다.

대단히 기본적인 것이지만 그래도 혹시 모르는 분이 있을까 싶어 언급합니다. Few앞에 부정관사 a가 있으면 “별로 없는 가운데서도 있는 것”을 강조합니다. There are few a signs that I'm ill. 내가 아프다는 표시가 (적지만) 약간 있습니다. 하지만 a가 없으면 “약간 있을수 있는 가운데서도 없는 것”을 강조합니다. There are few signs that I'm ill. 내가 아프다는 표시가 (있기는 있지만) 거의 없습니다.

Cold weather affects my health. 찬 날씨가 내 건강에 영향을 준다. The tax increase will affect many people on daily income. 세금인상은 하루하루 먹고사는 사람들에게 영향을 미칠것이다. The audience was deeply affected. 청중들은 크게 영향을 받았다.
